Humanities and Languages

The department of Humanities and Languages is in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.  The Department caters for the needs of training of teachers, researchers and other professionals. This is in response to the rising demand for teachers and related professionals in the country. The department prepares professionals equipped with appropriate skills to meet challenges posed by Humanities and Languages as subjects. The department currently has undergraduate and post- graduate students in the fields of History, Geography, Religious Studies, English, Literature and Kiswahili interested in diverse areas of research in the three sub- disciplines. Currently the department offers Bachelor of Arts (Geography), Bachelor of Arts (with Education), Bachelor of Education (Arts), Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The vision of the Department is to be dynamic an inclusive and competitive Centre of excellence in teaching, research and community outreach.

 

Objectives
The main objectives of the Department are:

  1. to offer academic programmes leading to the awards of degrees in History, Geography, Religious Studies, English, Literature and Kiswahili;

  2. Carry research in diverse fields of History, Geography, Religious Studies, English, Literature and Kiswahili; and

  3. Promote high standards and learning.

Academic Staff and Specializations

The department has well-trained and qualified teaching staff at all the disciplines.  These lecturers include Professors, Ph.D holders and MA Degree holders at advanced level of PhD qualification. Prospective students will have an enjoyable learning environment through interaction with faculty members through lectures, seminars, tutorials, fieldwork and other practical sessions.
